With no formal training in the shoe making trade except a few evening classes at London College of Fashion, Kat Maconie and her brand of design driven yet versatile shoes have come a long way since 2009 when she started with a small range of ballerinas designed in a tiny West London studio. Since then the Kat Maconie brand has been seen on the likes of Keira Knightley and Jessie J and is regularly featured in top fashion magazines.
Currently sold in over 18 countries as well as Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Anthropologie and Poste Mistress in the UK, Kat has gone from strength to strength -she recently won Drapers Shoe Designer of the Year and is looking to launch a handbag and accessories line in the near future.
We caught up with Kat to find out more….
Q. With no formal experience in the shoe making trade- did you find starting your own shoe label daunting?
It was very daunting and an incredible learning curve but also so rewarding. Of course there were many up and downs and many mistakes I made but I am very proud of what I have achieved over the last few years.
Q. You have a pretty impressive stockists list - what was your first break through?
Poste Mistress was I think our main breakthrough particularly in the UK. It meant being stocked in Harvey Nichols and now the Selfridges shoe gallery which are the kind of shops I have always dreamt of being stocked in!
Q. How big is your team?
My team has slowly grown over the last few years. We are now five which is still pretty small but means everyone has a real input in shaping the brand and like a little family!
Q. What's the hardest thing about running your own business?
I never really switch off especially during delivery season! It means a lot of yoga and surrounding myself with positive people to avoid going completely crazy trying to deliver everything on time!
