This week's Blogger Of The Week is Maddy. We met Maddy at London Fashion Week and completely fell inlove with her style and couldn't wait to find out all about her. We were so pleased to find her blog Fashion Obscura. Maddy has a very unique personal style and her blog is a gorgeous photo diary of her original ensembles. If you ever want some style inspiration and new ideas on how to wear and mix things then Fashion Obscura is the place to start.
Q: What do you do career wise?
A: I’m currently studying my foundation year at Central Saint Martin’s. In the future I intend to become a professional fashion stylist or fashion photographer.
Q: What made you start blogging?
A: I grew up reading Vogue and endless fashion blogs instead of doing my homework. I remember reading about the teenage fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson and thinking how cool it was that somebody my age was attending Fashion Week whilst befriending the likes Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour. Before Tavi appeared on the fashion scene I assumed that blogging was restricted to “adults”, so I thought it would be an interesting idea to express my own style on a blog which reflected a unique side to stereotypical teenage fashion. Before I started my blog I was getting style scouted by many bloggers, fashion companies and photographers including James Mollison, so I thought it was about time I got my own credit!
Q: Where do you love to shop?
A: I’ve lived in London my whole life so I’m fortunate to be surrounded by such a broad spectrum of fashion and retail (which isn’t too good for my bank balance!). Like any teenager I love Top Shop and Zara because they produce such inexpensive yet trendy bits of clothing. I’m also a great fan of thrifting. I love browsing the endless rails of East End Thrift shops as well as my grandmas’ wardrobes for one off, original garments. I love mixing old and new pieces to create my own eclectic style. I am a great believer that you don’t have to spend lots of money on designer clothing to look good- a great eye for taste is more priceless than any designer handbag! I remember being told by somebody this Fashion Week that I was dressed “too haute couture” for their blog even though I was wearing 100% high street!
Q:Who are your style inspirations?
A: I seek inspiration from almost anything whether it be a song, a colour, a photograph or a film I’ve watched. Living in London is one of my greatest inspirations because I’m surrounded by so much culture, history and fashion. What I love most about London is that you see something different every day, so I’m never stuck for inspiration.
My real life inspirations include a random mixture of Alexander McQueen, Tim Walker, Edie Sedgwick and Lady Gaga. I love anyone who isn’t afraid to express their own unique style- they inspire me the most.
Q:How has your life changed since your blog has got successful?
A: In the short time since starting my blog this January I have achieved many life ambitions that I never dreamed would happen. Within the first month of starting my blog it featured on both the websites for Vogue and Teen Vogue which was the ultimate dream come true! Since then my blog has featured on Glamour and Yahoo amongst other international blogs, magazines and tv channels. I’ve also been fortunate enough to attend London Fashion Week which was an insane experience being constantly photographed, interviewed and filmed for eight hours straight- not forgetting the runway shows as well! However now that people know me for my fashion blog I never leave my home without red lipstick and my Ray Bans!
Q:What is your long term strategy for the blog?
A: I live by this quote from Alexander Mc Queen:
"I think there is beauty in everything. What ‘normal’ people would perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it."
I created my blog because I wanted to show a new side to the typical fashion blog. I think that its important to be yourself which I have reflected in my blog by combining my love of alternative fashion with my other passion, photography. The motive of my blog is to create a well produced end product; I plan and visualise each shoot like a fashion spread for a magazine- even if its for a much smaller audience! I try to make every post and outfit unique as I base each post on a new inspiration or idea. You could say I’m a perfectionist but as an art student I’m simply developing my creative thoughts into a reality.
Q: What are your three favourite pieces in your wardrobe?
A: At the moment I’m obsessed with my new acid yellow coat from Top Shop. It is a very vibrant shade of yellow and would make a traffic cone take a run for its money. However when I wore it to London Fashion Week this September it definitely added some much needed colour to the grey London skies! My most practical and worn item of clothing in my wardrobe is my vintage leather pencil skirt from Rockit. I wear it religiously as it matches with everything, plus I got it for a fraction of the cost than a new one- result! I rarely wear trousers which may explain why I love skirts so much. Another favourite skirt is a transparent plastic skirt from TopShop which certainly raises a few eyebrows when I wear it! It is definitely a quirky garment however its very practical in the rain!
Q: What would be the soundtrack to your life right now?
A: This is quite a tough question but in all honesty I would have to choose Lady Gaga’s recent single “Applause”. The song brings back many happy flashbacks of London Fashion Week where I well and truly “lived for the applause” of the photographers, journalists and bloggers that I met as it made me realise how much I well and truly love fashion!
Q: What are your three favourite items on BuyMyWardrobe.com?
A: I love everything on BuyMyWardrobe and I would happily buy it all if money was no object! However if I had to narrow it down I would first and fore most buy this beautiful Vintage Chanel Single Chain Bag as it is my dream handbag; it’s such a timeless and elegant accessory that deserves to belong in every wardrobe! As a lover of everything Alexander McQueen I instantly fell for this Hot Pink Buttery Jacquard Dress as it would make a perfect party dress for anyone wanting to achieve a daring look!
