The History of Mulberry

By Lori on Oct 12 2013

Mulberry. One of the most beloved British heritage brands. But where did it all start, and why the Mulberry Tree?

Roger Saul established the company in Somerset in 1971 with his mother Joan, using his £500 that he got for his Birthday. He decided to name his company after the Mulberry tree he walked past everyday to get to school. His first collection consisted of plaited belts and chokers that were considered as the handbags of their time. All Mulberry products were crafted from the best of natural leathers. Roger made sure each handbag was the result of highly skilled craftsmanship married with creativity, imagination and innovation.

His early collections were popular and found success in the established Biba boutique in London. In 1975, Roger brought out the ‘Hunting, Shooting, Fishing’ collection, which become renowned worldwide and everyone’s adoration for Mulberry began. Roger’s new style of design was known as ‘Le Style Anglais’ “an English style that owed nothing to an idea of staid, hard-edged or unyielding Britishness. This was fashion with a softer touch: relaxed confidence loaded with English references, understated, and as such, totally modern.”

One of the most important moments for Mulberry is in 2007 when designer Emma Hill joined the company and transformed it from a trusted briefcase and wallet maker into an international fashion powerhouse. Creating British iconic pieces such as the Bayswater and Alexa Chung bag. Today, Mulberry has stores throughout the UK and all over the world including Europe, the USA, Australia and Asia.

Mulberry has grown into a respected and successful global brand with an international presence and one that we will stay loyal to season after season.
