How did two British boarding school boys with no fashion background or experience, grow New Yorks coolest lifestyle brand?
In 2002, Marcus Wainwright & David Neville set to start a label that all their friends (men & women) would want to wear everyday. Wainwright folllowed his girlfriend he met in Mexico to New York (now his wife), when he called up Neville who was a banker at the time to start up a fashion business.
They said there was a gap in the market for a new type of fashion. A fashion that was cool, good quality and equally informal as it is formal. Something you could wear to work and wear on a Saturday. It was there for the taking, and they certainly took it.
They started with a group of craftsmen that had been round for years, they wanted to highlight the importance of quality and detail, they wanted to make clothes like they did fifty years ago. They began Rag & Bone with jeans. They later launched their men's line in Spring 2004 and expanded the label to offer a full women's collection by Fall 2005.
Soon after, Rag & Bone started to get the recognition it deserved with being a finalist in the Council of Fashion Designers of America's Vogue Fashion Fund contest in 2006 and they won the CFDA's emerging talent award in 2007.
