Did you know that a post on Twitter could land you an awesome internship at an up-and-coming pre-loved luxury marketplace?
Until a couple of weeks ago, neither did I! After moving to London from America just over a month ago, I’ve been busy getting settled in as I start my Master’s course in Brands, Communication, and Culture at Goldsmiths’ University. Even though I knew my course was going to keep me plenty occupied with theoretical readings and countless projects (including my Master’s dissertation), I also wanted to get some work experience as early as possible. While perusing Twitter on one of my lazy days before starting my course, someone that I followed retweeted BuyMyWardrobe, who said they were looking for a marketing intern. After checking out their website (and definitely swooning over a number of items in their online marketplace), It seemed like the perfect flexible opportunity for me to really have an impact on a small business. After emailing back and forth and an interview at their boutique, the team offered me the internship! So, for the next three months, I’ll be keeping busy working alongside the PR department to introduce our brand to more savvy stylistas all over the country.
On my days off, you’ll find me around South Kensington listening to American hip-hop or indie pop on my mobile as I scope out the latest items at the most posh charity shops in London, following the 2012 U.S. election, reading about branding and economic theory while sipping a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks (because I have to have a little taste of Seattle every once in a while), or catching up with one of my favorite TV shows online (any Kardashians, Project Runway, or Breaking Bad lovers out there?). While I can’t speak to my intern experience yet, I can say that my first day doing research in the BuyMyWardrobe HQ left me with the impression that I will have an amazing opportunity to contribute to a company whose brand I fully stand behind. Be on the lookout for my “Diary of an Intern” posts, starting next week!
