A dress so famous it has had it's own exhibition. This year one of our most beloved designers, Diane Von Furstenberg, celebrates the 40th birthday of her iconic wrap dress. A design so classic, it has been created in different colours and patterns for season after season, worn by an innumerable amount of women for four decades. It has been a witness to the world's dramatic change through these years but remained a consistent choice by the women of the world. A design truly worth celebrating.
The wrap dress was born when Diane saw former-President Nxon's daughter Julie Nixon Eisenhower on TV wearing a pairing of her wrap top with her wrap skirt. Diane loved this look and so decided to combine them into a single dress.
In the 1970's the popularity of the dress soared, it was the perfect work dress whilst also being chic enough for evening attire. "That one dress sold about 3 or 4 million. I would see 20, 30 dresses walking down one block. All sorts of different women. It felt very good. Young and old, and fat and thin, and poor and rich." - Diane told New York Magazine.
This sculpted dress has been seen on some of the most legendary women of our time. More recently from Kate Middleton to Michelle Obama.
“It’s never happened to a dress before—for the same style to have survived so many generations and still appeal to young people. So we wanted to celebrate that.” - Diane told W Magazine.
