So you may be fashion conscious, but what do you know about fashion with a conscience?
This year marks the 5th anniversary of an amazing collaboration between Vivienne Westwood and the International Trade Centre’s Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI). A dedicated philanthropist, Westwood was keen to find a way to make a difference in the world through fashion. She decided to outsource some of her bag production to Kenya, Africa, giving local people the skills and means to improve their situations.
“It gives people control over their lives. Charity doesn’t give them control…it makes them dependent. It’s incredible to think that we might change the world through fashion!” says Westwood.
Since the initiative was launched, ten bag collections have been handmade in Kenya. The bags have featured in Vivienne Westwood’s Gold Label, Red Label and MAN catwalk shows as well as in advertising campaigns.
The bag designs combine classic Westwood style with local African fabrics, prints and materials. “We’re not interested in just getting a cheap product, what’s important is that it’s ethically made,” says Christopher Di Pietro, Marketing and Merchandising director of Vivinne Westwood.
We are pleased to say that you can pick up one of these beautiful ethical bags via BuyMyWardrobe, the online designer fashion resale marketplace!
