The History Of Alexander Wang

By Cat Penn on Sep 28 2015

Hailing from California and with a penchant for black and tailoring, Alexander Wang is arguably one of the coolest designers going. You know his look, but do you know his story?

Wang grew up in San Francisco, but took off around the world to study design. His passion took him to Parsons in New York and Central Saint Martins in London, where he was influenced by chic street style and the immaculate tailoring of Saville Row.

In 2007 Wang released his first womenswear collection, which immediately got the young designer recognised. He went on to win the Vogue Fashion Fund award in 2008, winning $20,000 to further his business. With this he perfected his craft, propelling him further in to the sartorial spotlight and leading him to win the Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year award, in 2009. Following this came more awards and higher acclaim, until in 2011 he opened his first store in Soho, New York.

As Wang’s designs worked their way in to more and more retailers, and his own stores continued to appear, he was appointed Creative Director of Balenciaga. A brand known for its incredible shapes and a man with an eye for structure, this was a match made in heaven. During this partnership Wang also collaborated with H&M to create a sell-out collection that left consumers queueing round the block.

On the 31st of July 2015, it was announced that Wang and Balenciaga would be going their separate ways (a mutual agreement, no juicy gossip here). Although no longer at the helm of one of the most coveted fashion houses, we can’t wait to see where Alexander Wang goes next; we have a feeling the only way is up…
