The best words of advice you have ever heard?
"EVERYTHING PASSES". It helps when things are not going well. Advice from my wise father.
How would you describe your style?
Often feminine, sometimes unexpected, always evolving!
What is the best piece of clothing you have ever bought?
A YSL TUXEDO. I couldn't afford it at the time, but have worn it endlessly. The jacket, at one time or another, has been flung over virtually every other piece I own.
Also, AN EARLY 90’S DRIES VAN NOTEN FELT SKIRT WITH GOLD FLOWER SHAPED PAILLETTES. It is totally fantastical.
How did you get into styling?
The inspirational editor Glenda Bailey (now US Harpers Bazaar) took a risk and hired me at UK Marie Claire where I eventually became Beauty & Style Director. Her eye for style was inspirational.
If you weren’t a stylist what would you be doing?
Spending more time with my children. But I think having a balance is great; they are interested in what I do.
What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?
Thinking that the face one presents to the outside world doesn't matter.
What is the best thing about being a stylist?
Every day is different, every job is different. One day can be a magazine cover, next day a red carpet, another day a private client. I am lucky to meet interesting and diverse people.
Your favourite restaurant?
Any restaurant touched by the genius of Keith McNally, and Cibo in Holland Park for a quiet date night.
Do you believe in role models?
No, but I believe in style icons.
Would you say that you are conservative or bold?
Not as bold as I would like to be.
What are the rules in the way you dress?
Be true to your own sense of style and don't dress for anyone else.
Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?
I like to play with jewellery. It is a great style signifier.
A woman should always look like… SHE IS CONFIDENT IN HER SKIN
How do you select your clothing every morning?
With my heart and little regard to the practicalities of what I am doing that day.
Two essential things a woman should know about style are…
It should make you feel good about yourself. In the end there are more important things to worry about.
Do you have any shopping rituals?
I am mostly cautious and think before I buy.
If I am inspired enough to make an impulse buy, it is usually something so great that I will wear it forever.
I tend to buy quality, but less of it. Fashion that is too disposable makes me queasy.
What is the first thing you notice on a woman?
Posture and facial expression.
The one image that defined your approach to style…
Peter Lindbergh fashion images are totally transporting for me.
One article of clothing that a woman needs to pay close attention to is…
Her underwear. Good foundations are essential to how everything else will look, and how you will feel.
Is comfort an enemy of style?
No, the opposite. Usually, for a look to work it should appear effortless.
